Understanding columns is a fun way of building construction and engineering. A column looks like a tall, strong structure that helps support buildings and bridges. But have you ever wondered what exactly is inside of those distillation columns?
When you peer into columns you see many moving parts that cooperate to balance out. Columns may seem simple from the outside, but what’s on the inside really counts. Let us look at the fractionation column and see what makes them strong.
A closer look at columns shows that the key part of the structure is a core, one could say the core is the king. The core runs directly down the center of the column internals, providing it strength. Surrounding the core, materials like concrete or steel totter around and reinforce the column.
By understanding what is inside columns, we can see how they hold heavy objects and resist forces like wind. Columns are designed to evenly distribute weight so that buildings do not collapse. Engineers can build safer buildings if they understand how distillation column internals are built.
We also learn that columns have reinforcements, such as rebar or steel beams, within them to enhance their strength further. These make columns more rigid but not twist or bend.
