Different sections of a distillation column work in concert to remediate liquids. Part of that is a thing that we call a tray. They hold liquid, and as they do so, they mix it with vapor, and this makes the column work better. The mixing makes liquid separation easier.

It is because the trays play a very vital role in splitting the liquids in the column during the distillation process. This gives the liquid and vapor more room to mix. This interaction between the liquid and vapor plays a critical role in how well the column performs. If no trays were involved, the separation wouldn't work as effectively, and we wouldn't receive the different types of liquors that we require.

Optimizing liquid-vapor contact through structured packing

There are other ways to enhance a distillation column, one such being the use of structured packing. The structured packing is essentially shelving that support the liquid. These theoretical shelves allow for more mixing of liquid and vapor. The more space, the more quickly — and effectively — separation can occur. So we end up using structured packing to recover those liquids more efficiently.
