China has a long tradition of columns used in its architecture. Columns used to prop large things — like temples and palaces. The design of these columns gradually became more intricate, with numerous carvings and embellishments. Even now, Chinese columns appear in many a new and old building.
Unlike columns in Western buildings, these columns are constructed much differently on the inside. Chinese columns tend to be comprised of wood, carved and assembled in layers.
